Hip injuries can be especially painful and complicated due to the anatomical structure of the hip joint which calls for a very smooth fit between the top of the femur bone ( thigh bone) and the acetabulum, the space in which the top of the femur fits into the hip bone. It is generally a smooth weight-bearing joint, and any variation to the movement process can cause long-term ramifications, such as pain, severe wear and tear of the articular surface cartilage, damage to the tendons and ligaments associated with the joint as well as numerous other problems that can inevitably lead to hip replacement.
One of the most common types of injuries to the hip is a fracture of the acetabulum. If the acetabulum is fractured due to accident or injury, it can require a major procedure involving the attachment of plates and screws to stabilize the joint site. Rarely are doctors able to re-create the hip joint to fit exactly as it was before the accident. Therefore, it is common for acetabulum fractures and hip joint fractures to require further procedures including arthroscopic procedures and total hip replacement surgery.
